Senior lecturer at the Faculty of Military Science of the University of Stellenbosch from January 1991 to March 1998. I retired as a Lieutenant-Colonel on 31 March 1998.
Head Operations of Executive Development at USB and later USB ED – 1998-2001. As such I have been responsible for the development and customisation of executive and management development programmes for corporations and the positioning of these and functional programmes in the public market.
I lectured on various executive and management development programmes in Strategic Management, Financial Management, and Systems Thinking since 1998.
I was appointed as CEO of USB Executive Development in Jan 2002 – Oct 2004.
I developed and taught on management and development programmes for a large number of corporates in South Africa.
1 November 2004 – 31 March 2005: CEO of ICG Corporate. I was appointed to grow executive education on a distance education technology in the middle and senior management segment. Left to open my own consultancy.
1 April 2005 – 31 December 2005: Own consultancy in the field of teaching, coaching and consulting. I lectured at the University of Stellenbosch Business School, and the Tswane University of Technology.
1 January 2006 – 25 October 2007: Managing Director of KGA Life Ltd, an underwriter in the assistance insurance business. The company is of medium-size and serves the lower end of the market. My job was to stabilize the company and to ensure that its senior and executive management had the required competencies. During this period I maintained my links with the USB. I eventually left as I felt that my areas of strengths and competencies were not aligned with the needs of the company. Its primary need was a relentless focus on administration and the management of risk. My needs were at a higher level.
1 November 2007 – May 2015: Owner of own consulting business and Director International Programmes of the USB. I was involved with developing the academic content for foreign business schools on tour to South Africa on behalf of the International Affairs Division of the USB. I also developed live case studies for these business schools.
|I have Africa as the focus of my research. I try to understand the macro environment of the countries on the continent, and thereafter look at the business environment of each. Africa provides many opportunities for the willing investor. It is also important to understand the risks in the various markets. I also endeavour to identify trends that are manifesting themselves in Africa so as to better understand the possible futures of Africa. While 80% of my focus is on business, 20% is on the political environment.|
In addition to Africa, I study the business models of organisations and how they attempt to innovate these models. My primary focus so far has been the wine industry in South Africa, as well as food retail organisations in Africa.
