Biography
Ah-Hwee Tan is Professor of Computer Science at the School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE), Nanyang Technological University. He has been a faculty member of SCE since 2003 and was the Head of Division of Software & Information Systems from 2008 to 2014 and the founding Director of Emerging Research Laboratory, a research center for incubating new interdisciplinary research initiatives. Prior to joining NTU, he was a Research Manager at the A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), spearheading the Text Mining and Intelligent Agents research programmes. His current research interests include human-centric computing, brain-inspired intelligent agents, cognitive and neural systems, machine learning, knowledge discovery and text mining.

Ah-Hwee Tan received the Ph.D. in Cognitive and Neural Systems from Boston University, the M.Sc and the B.Sc (1st Class Honors) in Computer and Information Science from the National University of Singapore. He has published close to 200 technical papers in major international journals and conferences of his fields, including ten edited books and proceeding volumes. He holds two US patents, five Singapore patents, and has commercialized a suite of document analysis and text mining technologies. His research has been supported by research funding from major agencies, including National Research Foundation (NRF), Agency for Science Technology and Research (A*STAR), A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), DSO National Laboratories, and ST Engineering. He has also served as a technical consultant to A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) and DSO National Laboratories for technology transfer and exploitation of several technologies.

Prof. Tan is an Associate Editor or Editorial Board Member of several international journals, including the multidisciplinary IEEE Access, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics: Systems, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, Applied Intelligence (Springer), Journal of Database Management (IGI Publishing), Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Smart Environment (IOS Press) and Applied Soft Computing (Elsevier). He also plays active roles in major international conferences in his fields, serving as General Chair of 2015 IEEE/WIC/ACM Conference on Web Intelligence (WI’15) and 2015 IEEE/WIC/ACM Conference on Intelligent Agent Technology (IAT’15), Program Co-Chair of 2014 International Conference on Brain Informatics and Health (BIH’14), Poster Chair of Fourth International Joint Conference on Ambient Intelligence (AmI’13), General Co-Chair of INNS-Winter Conference (INNS-WC’2012), Program Vice-Chair of IEEE/WIC/ACM IAT’2010, Program Co-Chair of UIC’2009, Senior PC member of IJCAI’16 and AAMAS’15, and Technical Program Committee member of ACM SIGKDD, IEEE ICDM, SDM and many more. He received the DSO Divisional Innovation Award in 2016, ACM Recognition of Service Award and the Web Intelligence Consortium Outstanding Service Award in 2015. He is also a recipient of Lim Soo Peng Book Prize, Asia Life Gold Medal, Cambridge Scholarship, Tan Kah Kee Young Inventor Award (Silver), NUS Overseas Graduates Scholarship, KRDL High Achiever Award, Optimal 2003 Gold Award, Tan Chin Tuan Fellowship in Engineering and the 2012 MultiMedia Modelling Conference Best Paper Award.

Prof. Tan has been known internationally for his work on cognitive and neural systems and has delivered many keynotes, plenary and invited talks at international conferences held in Australia, United States, United Kingdom, Poland, Japan, China and Singapore. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, Member of Web Intelligence (WI) Technical Committee and Web Intelligence (WI) Conference Steering Committee, and Vice Chair of IEEE CIS Task Force on Towards Human-Like Intelligence.
Research Interests
Prof Tan's research areas include intelligent agents, cognitive and neural systems, machine learning, knowledge discovery and text mining.

His current projects focus on Silver Assistants for Ageing in Place (with UBC-NTU Research Centre of Excellence for Active Living of Elderly - LILY), Learning and Memory (with DSO National Laboratories), and Joint Situation Awareness Modelling and Collaborative Reinforcement Learning (with STE-NTU Corp Lab).
