National Medical Research Council (NMRC) May 17 grant call is now OPEN

​The National Medical Research Council (NMRC) May 17 grant call is now open. Applications will be via the nGager system except for OF-LCG.

 

Important notes for proposal preparation to NMRC:

· NMRC has highlighted that PIs are encouraged to consider the translation pathway for research they are proposing in submissions, e.g. potential area of application and exploitation of research.

· The vision of HBMS domain under RIE2020 is to be a leading centre that advances human health and wellness, and creates economic value for Singapore and Singaporeans, through the pursuit of excellence in research and its applications.

NMRC May 17 grant call 

PI with PhD/MBBS/MD/BDS

PI must hold a primary appointment in a publicly funded institution and salaried by institution (not under any grants)

Open Fund Individual Research Grant (OF-IRG)

Support the conduct of research proposals in basic and translational clinical research relevant to human health and wellness as well as research that looks at the causes, consequences, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of human diseases.

  • Capped at one application for each PI
  • Open to all research themes

 

Priority themes:

  • Cancers
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Diabetes mellitus and other metabolic/endocrine disorders
  • Infectious diseases
  • Neurological and sense disorders

 

For YIRG only RSO additional requirements apply

  • Not more than 7 years post-PhD or 10 years post-MBBS/MD/BDS
  • PI must not have held any national  grants
  • Mentor highly recommended
  • Proposed area of work distinct from their current supervisor's existing research and supervisor cannot be a team member
  • Upon award written commitment from host institution undetaking commitment to awardee's career development
$1.5 million inclusive of indirect cost capped at 20% 3-5

Open Fund Young Individual Research Grant (OF-YIRG)

Sub-category of OF-IRG. A step for new investigator to a first independent national level grant.

To promote excellence in translational and clinical research; nurture a vibrant research community of clinicians and enhance knowledge translation for better health and economic outcomes.

A unique opportunity to bring together investigators from across all of Singapore with clinician scientists and clinical investigators in the hospitals and Academic Medical Centres.

1.    Cancers

  1. Precision Methods for prevention, disease detection and treatment stratification
  2. Metastasis and Resistance
  3. Enhancing Cancer Immunotherapy

with priority given to:

  • Breast cancer
  • Gastrointestinal (colorectal & gastric) cancer
  • Haematological cancer 
  • Liver cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Nasopharyngeal cancer

 

2.   Cardiovascular diseases

  1. Macrovascular Disease: Myocardial infarction and chronic coronary heart disease
  2. Stroke
  3. Macrovascular Disease: Aortic and Peripheral Arterial Disease

 

3.   Neurological and sense disorders

i)   Age-related neurological and eye disorders, with priority given to:

  • Vascular Dementia and Parkinson's Disease
  • Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Glaucoma

 

 2 stage call : Letter of Intent (LOI) followed by invited full proposal

$25 million inclusive of indirect cost capped at 20%5

PI must hold a primary appointment in a publicly funded health institution and salaried by institution (not under any grants)

Clinician Scientist – Individual Research Grant (CS-IRG)

Provided to Clinician Scientists (CS) to carry out medical research on a specifically defined topic.

  • PI must have MD/MBBS/BDS

  • Mentor required
  • PI must not have held any national  grants
  • PI must not have held any grants cumulatively > $300,000 from any other agencies

proposed area of work would be distinct from their current supervisor's existing research. The applicant's current supervisor should not be a co-investigator on the proposal.

Clinician Scientist – Individual Research Grant – New Investigator Grant (CS-IRG-NIG)

Sub-category of CS-IRG for new clinical investigators.

$200,000 + 20% indirect cost2

Transition Award (TA)

Assist budding, young clinicians who have just returned from formal research training to build up their capability in research.

  • PI must be clinically qualified (MD/MBBS/BDS)
  • Singaporean or PR upon submission
  • Specialty training beyond medical or dental school

 

Upon award applicant must hold

  • regular-rank faculty/ academic appointment in academic medical centres or medical school within 3 months of award conveyance

 

For TA

Received scientific training (PhD, Masters or at least 2 years of post-MBBS/MD intensive research experience)

 

For CSA

PI must have at least one national or international research grant, equivalent to an Individual Research Grant (IRG)-level grant

salary and + $375,000 research grant + 20% indirect cost3

Clinician Scientist Award (CSA)

Provides salary and funding support for selected outstanding clinician scientists, in carrying out internationally competitive translational and clinical research.

Senior Investigator (SI) - Senior Associate Prof to full Prof

Singapore Translational Research Investigator Award (STaR)

A scheme to attract and nurture established, world-class clinician investigators to undertake cutting edge translational and clinical research in Singapore.

  • Medically qualified doctors (MDs/MBBS) with advanced clinical specialty training

 

Upon award applicant must hold

  • regular-rank faculty/ academic appointment in academic medical centres or medical school within 3 months of award conveyance
  • at least 9 months of residency in Singapore for each calendar year over the duration of the grant award
Max $600,000 salary per annum +  $5million research grant + 20% indirect cost5

Clinical Trials Grant (CTG)

Clinical trials for the development of novel therapies, interventions and diagnostics, focusing on healthcare needs. 

 

2 categories

CTG-Industry Collaborative Trials (CTG-ICT) open call: Supports clinical trials of strategic industry partnerships that are important for the development of the clinical trials landscape in Singapore. ICTs involve both clinician and company contributing intellectual inputs and funds to conduct the trial


CTG-Investigator-Initiated Trials (CTG-IIT): For early and late phase trials  initiated and driven by clinicians who are interested to conduct trials

  • PI must fulfill HSA's requirements for conducting clinical trials
  • Medically qualified doctors (MDs/MBBS) with advanced clinical specialty training

 

Open to all research themes

For CTG-ICTopen call

Industry contribution of at least ≥70% (cash or in-kind) of the Total Project Costs (TPC) based  on Research Collaborative Agreement between the host institution and the industry partner

 

For CTG-IIT

No minimum industry contribution, however, applications with industry contribution would have higher priority.

 

CTG-ICT: 30% of the TPC + 20% indirect costs

 

CTG-IIT: $1.5mil (inclusive of 20% indirect costs)

Applicable to applicants not under academic track appointment (Lecturers and Assistant Professors are exempted)

·    application will not be endorsed without the review reports

·    review reports should be returned to the PIs by the School directly to ensure proposals are strengthened prior to submission

2) Completed applicant eligibility checks form

RSO additional requirements for OF-LCG - to be submitted to RSO by 22 May

1) Review reports from a) Chair or Centre/Institute Director and b) 2 additional reviewers nominated by Chair or Centre/Institute Director
