Assoc Prof Boh Wai Fong
My scholarship examines how information technology and other mechanisms can be used to facilitate knowledge and information sharing across individuals, groups and organizations. My research tends to focus on the problems of knowledge and information sharing, and I investigate how technology and other mechanisms can be used to effectively solve these problems. Recently, I have also began to expand my research into related areas of expertise management for innovation. I have completed several research projects ? many of which are large scale empirical studies examining knowledge and information sharing at different levels. Allocation of Human Capital Resources. My research has shown that the allocation of human capital resources to different types of work and project teams have significant implications on learning and knowledge sharing, leading to better performance. For example, my work on software developers show that organizations should consider trade-offs between allocating software developers to work on specific systems to gain specialized experience versus allocating software developers to work on related and unrelated systems to gain diverse experience (Boh, Slaughter and Espinosa, 2007). Another research project also shows that appropriately allocating experts to project teams where their expertise is required overcomes the costs of coordinating across distance (Boh et al, 2007). I am also currently engaged in a research project examining how individuals? breadth and depth of expertise influences innovation success, and how organizations should allocate individuals with different expertise profiles to work on product development projects. Knowledge Management. More recently, my work has focused on examining how various mechanisms such as the use of information technology can help organizations to more effectively share the knowledge embedded in individuals. My studies show that contrary to conventional thinking, which tends to view knowledge sharing mechanisms as either technology or people-oriented, different knowledge sharing mechanisms are complementary in nature (Boh, 2007). Hence, designing a portfolio of mechanisms (beyond simply the use of information technology) based on the characteristics and culture of the organization is critical for effective knowledge sharing. Enabling Information Sharing across Organizational Units and Organizations. I believe that information technology plays a very significant role in facilitating information sharing across business units and organizations. Hence, some of my recent work examines how organizations can make use of IT standards and enterprise architecture to facilitate the integration and sharing of data across business units in a large organization (Boh and Yellin, 2007), or across organizations in a supply chain (Boh, Soh and Yeo, forthcoming).

Enterprise Resource Planning ERP systems represent a major change in organisational information systems in terms of their scale and scope, reliance on vendors and advocacy of best practices. They are pervasive and often mission critical. Streamlining and integrating organisational procedures and standardising them over a single platform were what these systems promised. However, cases of expensive ERP implementations going awry has led many to recognise the inherent challenges of successfully implementing such complex package software. Research is currently in progress on these themes: (1) cultural fit of the underlying ERP business models, (2) partitioning the sources of misfits in ERP, (3) challenges in analysing, designing, and implementing ERP, and (4) ERP as an leverage for enterprise integration. Achieving Global Excellence in Asian Companies: Strategy, Governance and Technology The growth of the Asian market has led to the development of a select group of Asian companies that have successfully established an international presence. How did these enterprises transform themselves to capture the opportunities in the international market? What strategy and governance principles have they used? How has information technology enabled scale, responsiveness, and innovation in the highly volatile business environment? This research study seeks to understand the practices followed by a handful of leading Asian companies that have clearly established themselves as global leaders.

My research examines the implications of market microstructure for corporate behavior. For both research areas the implications of the evolution of asset prices are important, but the microstructure implications have been largely missing from the existing corporate finance literature. Such an omission is unimportant if corporate finance models work well in the sense of explaining the observed behavior of firms, but this is not the case. The proliferation of anomalies and the changing cast of factors needed to explain even partial firm behaviors like dividend payments, all suggest that success is not yet within our grasp. I found that the existing corporate finance literature ignores the central fact that market microstructure focuses on: prices of assets that they issue to raise investible funds evolve in markets. Markets have two important functions- liquidity and price discovery - and these functions are important for asset pricing, and hence, for the corporations that issue the assets. My research link these to concepts to our more basic constructs of firm behavior, and I will suggest that corporate finance models need to be recast in broader terms to incorporate the transactions costs of liquidity and the risks of price discovery. I found that information is not symmetric nor is equilibrium revealing. The symmetric information-based corporate finance models do not work because they assume that the underlying problems of liquidity and price discovery have been completely solved.
