Teru was born in Yokohama, Japan, but spent much of his childhood in San Rafael, California. He attended the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and received a BS in Applied Physics. After completing his undergraduate studies, he moved back to Japan and worked as an engineer for a few years, then as a freelance translator specializing in science and technology. He then decided to pursue his interests in philosophy and went back to the United States to get an MA in Philosophy from Tufts University in Boston.
