| Biography |
Jihoon Kim is assistant professor of the Division of Broadcast and Cinema Studies at Wee Kim Wee School of Communication, Nanyang Technological University, after receiving his PhD from the Department of Cinema Studies at New York University. His essays on film and media theory, experimental film and video, moving images in contemporary art, and digital media arts appeared in Screen, Screening the Past, Film Quarterly, and the anthology Global Art Cinema: New Histories and Theories (Oxford University Press, 2010), and will be forthcoming in Animation: An Interdisciplinary Journal and the anthology Taking Place: Location and the Moving Image (University of Minnesota Press, 2011).
While continuing researches on the topics that match his research interests, Dr. Kim is currently examining how digital interfaces remediate and transform the spatiality and spectatorship of previous media (photography, cinema, television, and video). He worked as film critic, translator, film festival programmer, and lecturer before his doctoral study in the United States, and has occasionally been consulting Korean institutions dedicated to art exhibition and film festival, including BIFF (Busan International Film Festival). |

- Intermedial, cross-disciplinary intersections between film studies, media studies, and contemporary art
- “Interface Matters,” or how digital interfaces (multi-screen installation, immersive installation, 3D cinema, mobile screen devices, locative media, video games) remediate and transform the spectatorship and spatiality of previous media (photography, cinema, television, and video).
- The aesthetic and ontological impacts of digital technologies on contemporary documentary practices
- Intersections between film theory and critical theory/philosophy, addressing the ethical and affective turn of global cinema, including East Asian cinema
- Avant-garde/artists' film and video, including experimental documentary and essay film
- Expanded cinema in contemporary art scene and new media art
- Contemporary Korean popular culture (including K-Pop) in national/transnational/transmedial contexts |
