Dr Chen’s research focuses on developing synthesis, purification, and enrichment methodologies toward the economical production of carbon nanotubes with well-defined atomic structure. His group invented new catalysts to manipulate chiral structure of carbon nanotubes with increased precision. Several novel methods were developed to purity and enrich nanotubes with specific properties, which are promising as a printable semiconductor material for flexible and printed electronics, and also are demonstrated to hold potentials in applications, such as energy storage devices, solar energy conversion, enzyme immobilization, and antibacterial coating. Moreover, his theoretical study also for the first time identified two new reaction pathways and the novel role of charge transfer in chirality selective synthesis of nanotubes, which was highlighted on Nature Publishing Group’s Asia Materials.
In order to minimize the environmental and health risks of carbon nanomaterials while maximizing their application potentials, his group also elucidated several key factors, such as aggregation, metal residues and oxidative stress, in the antibacterial activity of both carbon nanotubes and graphene based materials, which was highlighted on Materials Today, and selected in “Nanotoxicology Virtual Issue” by American Chemical Society.
He has published 4 book chapters and 68 papers in top international journals with more than 1130 citations (H index = 20). He has been serving as a reviewer for 32 international journals and American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund. |
| Research Interests |
My research activities focus on realizing economical production and applications of monodisperse single walled carbon nanotubes from a chemical engineering approach:
(1)Design and synthesize novel catalysts for the controlled economical production of carbon nanotubes with a well-defined atomic (n,m) structure.
(2)Develop and implement purification and enrichment methods for obtaining carbon nanotubes with desired electronic properties.
(3)Innovate and propose new carbon nanotube characterization methodologies for quality control and to provide performance guidance.
(4)Investigate and elucidate growth mechanism of carbon nanotubes through theoretical simulation.
(5)Promote carbon nanotube applications, in particularly, flexible and large-area electronics (macroelectronics), solar energy conversion, electromagnetic interference shielding, antibacterial materials, and catalyst (enzyme and noble metal) supports.
(6)Investigate antibacterial activity and toxicity of carbon nanotube for safe usage of nanomaterials. |
