|Cheng Boon is a senior lecturer at the Nanyang Business School in NTU where he teaches Organisational Behaviour and Leadership. Prior to joining NTU, Cheng Boon served in the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and his last appointments were Commander Air Warfare Training Institute (AWTI) and Head Training Development Group (Hd TDG) from May 2007 to Dec 2011. Prior to that, Cheng Boon has held three other command appointments ranging from Commanding Officer Field Defence Squadron (CO FDS), CO 3 Divisional Air Defence Battalion (CO 3 DA BN), School Commander Ground Based Air Defence School (CO GBAD Sch).
He is currently doing his PhD with University of South Australia and his research area is – “Emotional Intelligence and Leadership Effectiveness”. He completed his Master of Education from Monash University in 2008. As a believer of life-long learning, Cheng Boon also obtained Graduate Diplomas in Leadership Development and Organisational Learning, and Management Research in 2004 and 2009 respectively. He also obtained his Honours Degree in Psychology from Monash University in 1997 under the SAF Academic Training Award and his research thesis was “Calibration between confidence and quality of decision”. In 1996, Cheng Boon was selected as an exchange student in University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where he was involved in “Decision making and situation awareness research”.
Cheng Boon is also a reviewer for the Arabic Human Resource Symposium 2012, he contributed through sharing his knowledge on leveraging technologies for training and education. As an Associate Professional Member of the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Management (ANZAM), Cheng Boon was selected to present the topic on leadership and emotional intelligence. He also actively contributed In 2010, he also presented his research area at the 5th Asia Pacific Symposium for Emotion at Work (APSEW). In 2008, he was invited to present at 13th International Training and Education Symposium at Japan Defence Force College in 2008 on the topic of Challenges and Development of Professional Military Education and Training.
Cheng Boon is also a passionate lecturer in Organisational Learning and Leadership Development, where he has been regularly invited to share his knowledge on Leadership Development and Organisational Learning at the various SAF leadership institutes, including the prestigious Goh Keng Swee Command and Staff College. In addition, Cheng Boon was also appointed as National Education facilitator and he delivered many NE lectures for the schools and Civil Servants at Civil Service College.
Cheng Boon has over 10 years of experience as a lecturer and facilitator for Organisational Learning and Leadership Development. His research interests include Training and Education Methodology, Teams and Leader Development and Assessment. He has also rich experiences in Security Operations, Crisis Management, Change Management, and Value Inculcation. Cheng Boon has also designed and implemented as series of active learning pedagogies for leadership and Core Values programmes in the RSAF. His rich experiences in developing comprehensive security and crisis management plans were evident when he was the Commanding Officer of Field Defence Squadron (CO FDS) during 911 where he has to lead the squadron to handle many high key security operations and crises including the co-ordination of security plan with various agencies such as the CIA, Security Command HQ, and MFA to protect the President of the United States in 2003 during his visit to Singapore.
Cheng Boon was awarded the National Day Award (Military) in 2006 by the President of Singapore. In 2008, he was again presented with the Chief of Air Force’s CARDINAL Award for his contributions in people and leadership development in the RSAF. He is a graduate of the SAF Command and Staff College and holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (NS).
