Wlodzislaw Duch heads the Department of Informatics, Nicolaus Copernicus University, Torun, Poland, and has been a Visiting Professor at the School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (2003-07), and Nanyang Visting Professor (2010-12). His Ph.D. was in quantum chemistry (1980), he was a postdoc at the University of Souther California, Los Angeles (1980-82), made D.Sc. (habilitation) in applied mathematics (1987).
He worked at the University of Florida (Gainsville); Max-Planck-Institute of Astrophysics and Max-Planck-Institute of Psychological Research (Munich, Germany), Kyushu Institute of Technology (Iizuka), Meiji University (Tokyo) and Rikkyo University (Tokyo) in Japan, and several other institutions. He has been a general chair, co-chair program chair in a large number of conferences and workshops, including various IEEE, ENNS conferences, and a recent series of "Cognitive Autumn in Torun" conferences.
He has been or still is on the editorial board of Cognitive Neurodynamics, Computer Physics Communications, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, Journal of Mind and Behavior, Neural Information Processing Letters and Reviews, and ten other journals. He has been a co-founder and scientific editor of the “Polish Cognitive Science” journal and Society, served as the President of the European Neural Networks Society executive committee (first term 2006-2008; second term 2009-11), member of IEEE CIS Technical committee (since 2003), member of International Neural Network Society Board of Governors (2003) and numerous other scientific committees and institutions. He also worked as expert of the European Union science programs (since 2003). He published over 420 scientific and popular articles, 4 books and edited ten other books. His DuchSoft company made GhostMiner software package marketed by Fujitsu.
Expert in computational intelligence (CI), especially methods that facilitate understanding of data, and neurocognitive informatics, or algorithms inspired by models of brain functions at different levels. Among other topics he works on creation of general CI theory based on similarity evaluation and composition of transformations, meta-learning schemes that automatically discover the best model for a given data, geometrical theories for modeling of mental events and relating such models to neurodynamics, models of attention deficit disorders integrating genetic, molecular, neural and behavioral levels, infant learning and toys that facilitate mental development. He has also written a number of papers in the philosophy of mind, collaborating with philosophers interested in cognitive sciences. With a wide background in many branches of science and understanding of different cultures he bridges various scientific communities.
