Astrid Almkhlaafy

astrid almkhlaafy is currently assistant professor at NTU's school of art design and media in visual communication. She holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BA in classical & near eastern archaeology form Bryn Mawr College. Astrid pursued her art and design practice internationally spending much time in Japan, the USA & UK. She has exhibited and presented her work in Tokyo, London, New York, Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, San Francisco, and the Bay Area. Her current major project involves research in China, Cambodia and Indonesia in an investigation of sacred sites, temples and mountains, examining the process of pilgrimage and methodologies of performing and delineating such actions.
She has taught for the London college of communication in the design for advertising pathway as well as in the new media department at Epsom Center for the creative arts, UK. She has also been invited to present her research and work as a visiting designer to Central Saint Martins, Brighton and LCC. In Tokyo she was the design and media manager for the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan and the art director for the Tokyo American Club as well as a typography instructor for Tamabi university.
Astrid's world of design is centered in the world of live art as communication and audience immersion, in physically engaging audiences in communicating the conceptual. | Research Interests |
| Graphic Design history, typography, mapping, live art as communication and participation art. Currently working on two funded research and design projects using GPS, video and site-specific research in South East Asia and China. The research is focused on pilgrimage sites, metaphorical mountains, and the Tao mountains of China. |
