Prof Lim Joo Hwee

Adjunct Professor

Prof Lim Joo Hwee

LIM Joo Hwee received his B.Sc. (Hons I) and M.Sc. (by research) degrees in Computer Science from the National University of Singapore and his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science & Engineering from the University of New South Wales. He has joined Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) and its predecessors, Singapore since Oct 1990. His research experience includes connectionist expert systems, neural-fuzzy systems, handwritten character recognition, multi-agent systems, content-based image/video retrieval, scene/object recognition, and medical image analysis. Dr. Lim has co-authored more than 180 international refereed journal and conference papers as well as 16 patents (awarded and pending).

Dr. Lim has been a key researcher in two international research collaborations, namely the Real World Computer Partnership (Apr 1997 to Dec 2001, receiving 35 millions yen annually from METI, Japan) and the Digital Image/Video Album project (Jan 2000 to Jul 2003, with approx. S$1 million funded by A*STAR) with School of Computing, National University of Singapore and CNRS, France. He also contributed technical solutions to industrial projects on pattern-based diagnostic tools for aircraft and battleship navigation systems, and knowledge-based post-processing for fax/form recognition.

Dr. Lim is currently the Department Head of the Computer Vision & Image Understanding Department, with staff strength of sixty research scientists and engineers, at I2R, Singapore, and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is also the co-Director of IPAL (Image, Pervasive Access Lab), a French-Singapore Joint Lab (UMI 2955, Jan 2007 to Jan 2015). He is bestowed the title of 'Chevalier dans l’ordre des Palmes Academiques' by the French Government in 2008 and the National Day Commendation Medal by the Singapore Government in 2010. He is also the Director (Imaging) of a new joint lab SAILOR (Jun 2009 to Jun 2012) between I2R and Singapore Eye Research Institute where computer scientists and clinicians collaborate closely.

Dr. Lim has served as technical program committee members for international conferences e.g. ACM CIVR’05, VIP’05-06, ACCV’06-10, IEEE ICME’06-09, MMM’07-09, IEEE EMBC’09, IEEE WCCI’10, IEEE ICIP’10 etc and reviewer for international journals in multimedia and computer vision etc. He has also been invited as evaluator for project proposal submitted to the Dutch Technology Foundation STW (funding agency for university research) in 2006 and French ANR (national agency for research) in 2010.
Research Interests
Dr. LIM Joo Hwee's areas of expertise are computer vision, pattern recognition, and computational intelligence. His current research works focus on scene/object recognition, content-based image retrieval, medical image analysis, and cognitive vision.
