|Chen-Hsi debuted her first feature film, ʻInnocentsʼ in 2012. Shot on an independent budget with non-professional actors, the film premiered in competition at the Rome International Film Festival, and went on to win several awards, including Best Director (Asian New Talents) at the Shanghai IFF, Best Screenplay (Ourense IFF) and the Jury Prize (Films de Femmes Creteil). Chen-Hsi was named as one of the top 5 Singaporean filmmakers to watch in 2013. |
Chen-Hsi's films have screened at many festivals and venues around the world, including the Directors Guild of America Los Angeles, Anthology Film Archives New York, and La Cinematheque Francaise in Paris. Her short films include the award-winning ʻWho Loves the Sunʼ which premiered at Clermont-Ferrand, and the documentary 'Conversations on Sago Lane'.
Chen-Hsi studied aesthetic philosophy at Wesleyan University and received her MFA in Film Production from USCʼs School of Cinematic Arts on a directing scholarship. She has directed branded work and TV commercials in SEAsia, for clients including Sony, the Disney Channel, United Pharma and Ogilvy.
She is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Art Design Media, NTU, where she teaches film directing and writing. She is an alumna of the Venice Biennale Production Bridge, Cannes Cinefondation l’Atelier, Torino Film Lab, Berlinale Talents, Film Independent Los Angeles, and a Co-Founder of the USC Women of Cinematic Arts.
