Mr Abel Perez Abad
Lecturer, School of Humanities
|Abel joins NTU after more than 12 years of experience lecturing at universities and secondary schools in Hong Kong, South Africa, The United States, the United Kingdom and Spain. At NTU, he has been teaching Spanish courses at basic and lower-intermediate level. He is working as a TEL co-coordinator and he is the Vice-Chair of the Research Committee at the Centre for Modern Languages.|
Abel Holds a postgraduate diploma in Education and an Honor's degree in English and American Studies and Linguistics at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (internationally recognised as a Master's level education). He is currently completing a Master of Arts in Spanish Didactics at Universidad Antonio de Nebrija. Abel is a strong believer in continuous education as a life philosophy and he takes every opportunity available to keep learning.
He has worked as a Spanish Lecturer at the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at HKU, where he has had the chance to be part of the Organization Committee of the Hong Kong International Conference in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language. He also contributed with their Secondary School Program and the School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE). During his time in Hong Kong, he cooperated with City University of Hong Kong teaching the General Education course "Image of the City". He worked as a Spanish teacher at the French International School of Hong Kong, using French as the language of communication in the teaching of both, collège and lycée students.
His South African experience includes the position of Spanish Lecturer at the University of Pretoria, where he organised a series of seminars in teaching Spanish as a foreign language for teachers from the Gauteng region. After that, he worked as a lecturer at Unisa, British International College and the University of Wits Language School in Johannesbourg. After his experience in South Africa, he co-authored a chapter for the Volume La enseñanza del Español en África Subsahariana (Teaching of Spanish Language in Subsaharian Africa) Published with Instituto Cervantes and La Catarata Publishing House.
In the United Kingdom, he worked as a teaching assistant at the Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies at the University of Bath, teaching advanced levels of Written Expression, Conversation Practice and Grammar. He also worked as a teaching fellow at the university's Foreign Language Centre.
In Spain, he worked as a Spanish Teaching Fellow in different institutions such as Complutense University and Syracuse University of New York (Madrid Campus). He worked as an English teacher at Colegio Lourdes too. His duties included preparing final year students for their National Competition Exam.
He is an accredited examiner for levels A1-C2 of the DELE (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language) issued by Instituto Cervantes. Occasionally, he has worked as a pedagogical advisor for a publishing house, providing workshops for teachers on didactics, motivation and culture in Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Slovenia and Instituto Cervantes in Greece. He was the recipient of a Fulbright-FLTA Scholarship in 2006 and he participated in the Sharing Words Project at the University of Manchester, winner of the 2005 European Award for Languages.
