Assoc Prof Chan Kim Yin

Kim-Yin CHAN is an Associate Professor in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management at the Division of Strategy, Management & Organization of Nanyang Business School (NBS), Nanyang Technological University. He started his full-time academic career at the Nanyang Business School in 2009 after a 25 year military career in the Singapore Armed Forces where had served as an adjunct associate professor with NBS from 2000-2008. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1999 majoring in Industrial-Organizational Psychology with a minor in Quantitative Psychology. He has published in top management journals including the Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Career Assessment, Multivariate Behavioral Research, and Educational and Psychological Measurement, and is also the lead author of the book, Military Leadership in the 21st century: Science and Practice, published by Cengage Learning in 2011. He has presented his work at the Academy of Management, World Entrepreneurship Forum, Society of Industrial-Organizational Psychology, International Congress of Applied Psychology, European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology, International Leadership Association, International Military Testing Association, and International Applied Military Symposium. Dr. Chan is a member of the AustralianAcademy of Management and the Society of Industrial-Organizational Psychology. From 2014 to 2017, he led a team of research investigators on a multi-year project measuring entrepreneurial, professional and leadership career aspirations for Nanyang Technological University’s Innovation and Enterprise Office, and, was also seconded to A*STAR HQ to assist in the area of scientist-researcher social and human capital (i.e., organizational, leadership, talent) development for innovation. He graduated from the University of London's Royal Holloway and Bedford New College with a First Class Honours degree in Psychology in 1988, and received his Masters and then a PhD in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1997 and 1999 respectively.
Research Interests
Professor Chan’s broad area of research expertise is in the area of human resource development and psychological measurement, focusing on entrepreneurial, professional and leadership development. His specific research areas of interest are as follows:
1. Career aspirations, attitudes/orientations and development in the 21st century, including boundarylessness, adaptability, identity & employability.
2. Holistic, lifelong career development in entrepreneurial, professional and leadership dimensions.
3. Leadership – Individual differences, leadership development and the motivation to lead.
and development systems, processes and issues.
3. Psychological aspects of Science, Research and Innovation and entrepreneurship.
4. Professions and professional development in the 21st century.
5. Military Leadership and professionalism – competency and values-based/ethical aspects and broader human capital/organizational management
